This is an interesting deciduous shrub with rich green, slightly glossy leaves and interesting magnolia-like flowers from early to mid summer on the tips of short spurs with the new growth. The flowers are a rich maroon-red-brown colour, actually much richer than pictured. The bush requires at least half a day full sun and does best with cool roots and good drainage. It will grow to 2.5m, and may be trimmed after flowering, in mid December.

This has been grown for many years by Peter Cave and is probably Michelia floribunda. Aptly named as it has masses of creamy scented flowers on a rounded tree to 4m in 10 years. New growth is covered with silky bronze hairs like a shiny cinnamon dusting, and the plant is quite hardy with inland climates like Putaruru. We just added a gallery of photographs below taken 22/6/13.

This is a hybrid with wonderful perfume. It is difficult to propagate but we have managed to do it after years of experimentation. It a native plant of Java and is grown throughout South East Asia so it is a little tender and can only tolerate a few degrees of frost. It can be grown successfully in a container where it will flower more profusely as long as it is given fertiliser and water on a regular basis. Once you…

Raised by Vance Hooper at Duncan and Davies and named about 1995. Special features: A compact free flowering hybrid that originally flowered 2 years from seed. Upright sturdy growth on a bush that likes to clump from the base. Dark, healthy foliage that offsets the numerous summer flowers. Spring flowers are a rich reddish violet, a very difficult colour to reproduce.

Raised by Felix Jury, Apollo is a very free flowering hybrid with large reddish purple almost campbellii flowers and sturdy growth. The freeness of flowering means it takes longer to make a big tree as it flowers over a long period in spring, and again in summer. The tree forms a rounded canopy to about 4 m tall and wide in 10 years.

('Sayonara' x 'Vulcan') A hybrid raised at the Auckland Botanic Gardens by Stuart Robertson about 2000, and named about 2007. Special features: A reasonably strong growing rounded tree that presents its flowers well and in abundance. This tree will get big with age. Magnolia ashei is classed as a subspecies of Magnolia macrophylla. This is probably the best garden plant of the species as it is the smallest grower. The foliage is generally healthier looking than ssp macrophylla. It occurs naturally in a limited range in northern Florida, where it lives in canyons and reaches out for the light from among pines and other species. It starts flowering from a young age, sometimes as a 2 year old seedling in the nursery. The flowers…

Magnolia 'Aurora' was raised by Os Blumhardt of Whangarei and is probably his best hybrid. It is a cross between 'Starwars' and M. sargentiana var robusta. It forms a columnar tree with an upright habit and settles down to flower in the second or third year from planting. One thing we have noticed at Magnolia Grove is that 'Aurora' will flower like clockwork every year while other varieties seem affected by the weather and flower later and earlier some years.

(M. soulangeana 'Amabilis' x M. cylindrica) 'Billowing Cloud' was raised from open pollinated seed at Duncan and Davies by Vance Hooper. Brixton Belle (Sweet Simplicity x Black Tulip) x 'Sir Harold Hillier' This is our flagship variety and one of the ultimate hybrids from Magnolia Grove. This is an exciting new hybrid born and bred in the district of Brixton, North Taranaki, New Zealand. Finally we have an instant Magnolia campbelli that often sets flowers in the first year from grafting. Brixton Salmon flowered 4 years from seed and is a hybrid of 'Genie' x 'Sir Harold Hillier'.We didn't propagate it for a few years due to its strong growing habit, but as it was an unusual rich salmon colour and flowered profusely we have done a few. Be prepared for a large growing tree, but also be rewarded with many flowers over a long season in spring, as well as summer flowers.
This is one of the best coloured yellow hybrids forming a small to medium sized rounded tree to about 4m in 10 years. It has received mixed reviews overseas with many references saying it takes up to 10 years to settle down to blooming, but this is DEFINIETLY NOT OUR EXPERIENCE. We have had Butterflies flower in the nursery as 2 year old plants, and in most cases you should have flowers in the second year from planting once the…

This is a magnificent tree from Caerhay's Castle in Cornwall. Imported by Peter Cave, this is one of the forms collected from the wild. It has a distinctive coarse textured bark, different to most other magnolias. Beautiful sculpted flowers like porcelain are produced after about 4 years. Foliage is quite hairy on the undersides for M. campbellii. The habit is quite broad as the upright branches arch outward with age and new shoots come up from the branches to raise…

This was introduced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University in Boston. It is derived from Magnolia stellata Waterlily and inherits the characteristic of showing a hint of pink, especially in a cool season. This is a very free flowering plant which makes a rounded to upright bush to 1.2m in 10 years. As with all magnolias may be pruned to limit size if eventually needed. We only have low graft bushes.

'Cleopatra' has a very similar colour to her great grandfather 'Lanarth'. An attractive crystaline red-purple that almost has a metalic sheen. The growth habit is an upright small tree with a columnar to pyramidal habit. 'Cleopatra' will produce summer flowers, particularly where summer rains are common. In January 2013 'Cleopatra' won first prize for the best new tree at the International Plant Trade Fair in Essen, Germany. 'Cook Splendour' was raised from a seedling at Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust as part of the original plantings, with a number of seedlings planted around the gardens. These seedlings were imported from Hilliers Nursery about 1951 by Douglas Cook when he was planting at Eastwood Hill. He donated a range of Magnolia campbelli seedlings to Pukeiti and these were planted around the gardens. The original plant of 'Cook Splendour' is growing in the area of the gardens called the Cook Block.…
