This is another good pink coloured stellata variety with very full flowers with many tepals. It is probably the most vigourous stellata variety so we have grafted them at 1m to 1.2m tall and this makes a beautiful little tree in no time. We have one in the garden that has grown to 3.5m in 10 years, but in quite a sheltered place.

This is an interesting deciduous shrub with rich green, slightly glossy leaves and interesting magnolia-like flowers from early to mid summer on the tips of short spurs with the new growth. The flowers are a rich maroon-red-brown colour, actually much richer than pictured.

The bush requires at least half a day full sun and does best with cool roots and good drainage. It will grow to 2.5m, and may be trimmed after flowering, in mid December.

This variety was raised at Duncan and Davies and a hybrid of 'Burgundy' x 'Vulcan' and it forms a rounded bush or small tree to 4m in 10 years. The growth is sturdy and spreading upward, with medium to large reddish purple flowers that are white within.

This hybrid bred by Ian Baldick was raised from the English classic variety 'Lanarth' and is a very good substitute for this variety. It has a similar upright habit and will begin to flower at about 3 or 4 years from planting with luscious purple flowers. Expect 4.5m in 10 years.

This is a hybrid raised in Japan either by a deliberate or chance hybrid between M. sieboldii and M. obovata in or before the 19th century. It has the best of both parents, a modest sized plant with showy perfumed flowers. The fruity perfume will fill the garden for many metres around the tree.

Duncan and Davies imported this clone from Hilliers in the early 1940's and it was propagated by layering from then until the late 1960's when it appeared to fall from favour. Our plants are grafted and perform well, developing flowers in the first year after planting. M. wieseneri forms a rounded to conical plant to about 4m in 10 years.
